CABA Facility
Off-Campus AHP Toxicology Facility at CABA:
The main laboratory building is a 3200 ft² facility containing four rooms and is fully equipped to conduct various toxicant exposure and surface water monitoring studies using the US EPA three species bioassays and resident toxicity test species. This laboratory space has non-chlorinated well water, deionized water, distilled water and Milli-Q purified water.
The 642 ft² main lab is primarily used for the execution of EPA acute and chronic freshwater toxicity tests, and sample preparation for Toxicity Identification Evaluation experiments. The equipment in the main lab used to conduct the EPA freshwater tests include 6 temperature and light controlled environmental chambers for incubation, eight orbital shaker tables, one vacuum pump for sample filtration, a particle counter for the enumeration of cells, three scales and one compound microscope.
The 1500 ft² wet lab is equipped to conduct exposures with small fish and invertebrates. This room has a large open space and allows for changes in the arrangement of temperature controlled baths and environmental chambers. Five temperature-controlled water baths totaling 153 ft² provide exposure space for a number of fish species. Eleven 32 ft³ environmental chambers provide ample capacity to refrigerate water samples and conduct organism exposures. Additional equipment housed in the wet lab includes three pH meters, three electrical conductivity meters, three YSI dissolved oxygen meters, hardness and alkalinity titration stations and an autoclave.
The 280 ft² negative pressure room is used primarily for animal exposure, storage and handling of hazardous substances. This room is equipped with a 6 ft² fume hood and avented, temperature controlled exposure chamber. In addition, a 24ft² bench is reserved for processing bioassessment samples and is equipped with two dissecting scopes.
